The New Penny
The New Penny's decor may be a little down-at-heel these days, but that doesn't stop its clientele from getting their high heels out and their glad rags on. Plus, cut the Penny some slack: it has been open since the fifties and is thought by some sources to be the UK's oldest gay bar. Having learned the rules of the gay scene inside out, the Penny has earned the right to break them. Hence the long-running success of the most eccentric event of Leeds' gay calendar: the New Penny Christmas party. Held yearly, of course... in August.
