Sometimes a quirky interior isn't enough to save a place from being soulless. Yes, they might have some funky cow-hide décor, but when it means you get zombified service and drinks that the un-dead wouldn't slosh down their lifeless throats (not to mention over-priced food) we'll take a grimy boozer with wonky benches any day. It's not a horrific experience (the soullessness doesn't quite reach Wetherspoonian standards), but then again neither is Croydon. You still wouldn't go there out of choice, though, would you?
