Poor old Nelly, her little face is barely visible – swinging away on its sign above a secluded alley (read piss-river) running to The Strand. Given that her weather-beaten mush is the only way a thirsty tourist would find the gaff you'd think they'd give her a lick of paint. Or perhaps not. Nevertheless, if you're happy sharing elbow, knee and face space with a dozen savvy regulars who know that this is one of the friendliest pubs for miles about, then go right ahead. Since the smoking ban, you also don't leave smelling like a tramp's wrinkly sack.
