August events in Bath
Even in rainy Bath, August is the month to lie back and smell the flowers during the day, then party 'til you sweat your own bodyweight in the evening.
Why not kick off at Party on The Hill at the Bath Racecourse (9th Aug). Kicking off at 8pm, it lasts until the wee hours and will feature local talents, a dance tent, fairground rides and an inflatable human football table. Itchy's maturity knows no bounds.
Everyone knows the South West is a pretty festival-orientated area of Britain. Some sort of foodie, art or music fest features on the agenda practically every month, and August brings two worth checking out.
Firstly, there's the EDF Energy Bristol Harbour Festival (1st–3rd Aug). Alright, so it's a short train ride away, but Bristol's largest Harbourside event includes on- and off-water entertainment, street theatre and water displays. And possibly a boat or two.
To wet that ever-parched whistle, Bath Ales Beer Festival (22nd Aug) at the Bath Racecourse sports a hefty variety of beers and other forms of booze. For that reason, as well as the number of beards on display, it's probably not as baby sibling-friendly as watching pretty boats on a sunny day. If you're up for a bit of a gargle, then make sure you take advantage of the 15% discount for groups of 15 or more. Gates open at 3.30pm.
As a final suggestion, if you're looking for something a bit more gentle and cultivated, then why not pay a visit to the Fashion Museum, where William Travilla, Marilyn Monroe's fashion advisor and one of the most prolific fashion designers of Hollywood, is showing off his garb (29th Jul–22nd Aug). As well as being a bit of a step up from Tranny and Susinnah, the exhibition is also charitable, touring in aid of the Alzheimer's Society. Easy on the eye and the conscience.
